U picked the right time to ask, coz I just discovered it myself. My phone is an LG U8330, which is hopefully exactly the same software (probably differs only in device drivers). The folder which on my system contains the files is:
G:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Application Data\LG Electronics\UMTS\LG PC Suite\LG Phone Manager\Messages
In the above, replace 'G:' with whatever disk you have Windows installed on, and 'Steve' with your system username.
The files end in an idx extension. The one for SMS messages is
ems.idx , and one for e-mails is
email.idx
I think you need to first drag and drop the messages from the pertinent subfolder(s) within 'Phone' to the pertinent subfolder(s) within 'PC', all within the 'Messages' part of LG Phone Manager - otherwise the messages are only in your phone but not actually on the computer.
If u can't find the drawer I mentioned above, do a Start->Search->For Files And Folders and enter "Application Data" in quotes as here and proceed from there.
You can open the idx file(s) in Wordpad or similar for a squiz (don't of course try to save them in same) - you will see the messages, phone numbers and a lot of unprintable characters, but not the dates (which are in non-text format).
I wonder if your LG Phone Manager also has a bug the same as my version 1.3.0.4 [menu Help->About] where messages in Outbox have no dates displayed. Would appreciate a note from you if you *don't* have this bug to hopefully get a copy off you, rather than smeg round with LG support for hours who will probably ignore me since my phone is out of warranty.
Another major program flaw is of course the lack of inbuilt facility to export data.
BTW you are well advised to back up the entire Application Data drawer before formatting your disk, and indeed you should back up your
entire hard disk to DVD. It's amazing what valuable data people often have they forget about which gets wiped forever on a format (believe it or not computer 'fixing' people often do just that without even asking).
Also BTW I discovered the folder and files in question by moving an e-mail around in LG Phone Manager then using Find Files and sorting by last modified time/date.
