Darkest Fear is one of those games that you know the second you start playing that it is nothing short of brilliance. Darkest Fear's developer Rovio Mobile has a healthy line up of quality games each a delight to mobile gamers and even non-convert PC and console gamers. Darkest Fear is not a complex game yet it is so well executed with a frightening story line, something usually absent from mobile games, that the simplicity of it all allows you to be whisked away into a world of terror.

Darkest Fear starts out with a phone call. Thomas receives a call from his wife where, in an urgent tone, she begs Thomas to come to the hospital for their daughter. Before Thomas can respond, the line goes dead. Thomas sets out for the hospital which is where the game begins.

Once Thomas reaches Grim Oak hospital things start to appear a little odd. Thomas is not greeted by any hospital staff at reception. Instead, a patient motions Thomas to a register. The register reveals that someone other than his daughter is missing. From here on in the horror element of the game is in full effect with every room you enter being another room of unknown apparatus, mumbling, scared patients, and most of all, darkness.

It isnt long before you discover that the patients are calmed by light and that in the darkness in the corners of rooms and unlit areas, there are things... things moving. These things and the whole emptiness of the hopspital have a very eerie feeling, a felling compelling you to go back, but you can't, your daughter is in the hospital somewhere.

Darkest Fear is uncommon in that it tackles the horror genre on the mobile platform. The horror is executed wonderfully with the story comprising a collection of black and white, but mostly black, frames of Thomas and the people he meets inside the hospital. This form of story line gives you a strong sense of purpose within the game and keeps you wanting to know more.

The game itself is a top down puzzle type game with elements from sokoban. You should not come to the conclusion that this is just a glorified sokoban clone as there are many other elements to the game such as keeping yourself in light which requires some thinking at stages, and rescuing hospital patients by keeping them in light. If you journey into dark regions then it isnt long before the things in the dark start to bump into you causing more than just slight bruises.

However you solve Grim Oaks mystery be sure to make wise decisions, there are multiple endings depending on the paths you take.

Discussion:
This has been one of my favourite mobile puzzle games so far. The sound is intense and a sure big feature. I am playing Darkest Fear Grim Oak, the sequel and will review that one when the time comes round. From what I can tell so far, the sequel is more of the same top quality.

Ryan.
