Doom is the game that really started the first person genre. Granted, there were a few earlier contender like Wolfenstein 3D, Kens Labayrinth, and 3D monster maze, but Doom is the title that first gained massive success. Converting such a graphically taxing game like Doom to a mobile phone is beyond most J2ME devices, so, the mobile incarnation of Doom thus far comes in the form of Doom RPG (Role Playing Game), a game based on Doom adapted for slower play on mobile handsets.
The story start when you are dispatched to Mars in response from a distress call from a Union Aerospace Corporation research facility. The distress call outlined that the base was under attack by an unknown force and that you are to neutralize the threat. Once you arrive on mars you are greeted by a few civilians and research scientists that are not exactly pleased to see that you are alone. Your job from here is to rendezvous with marines at the Junction gathering intelligence along the way to help neutralize the threat.
You are presented with a familiar Doom 3d view in which you have the freedom to walk around ask you please, talking to whom ever you choose. The freedom is limited to grid based movement where you can only ever face north, south, east, or west, and moving forward or backward one step moves you a grid space in the desired direction.
You arrive on mars with a pistol in hand, ready to take on the unknown enemy. Quickly, you realise that you pea shooter just isn't going to cut it against the hordes of enemies so more weapons are not far away. All the classics from doom are there including the shotgun, double barrelled shotgun, chain gun, rocket launcher, plasma gun, and even the BFG. New weapons include the axe which is used for breaking down broken doors as well as breaking up the enemy, a fire extinguisher for putting out all those stove fires, and, lets just say, there is another close range weapon too.
Since Doom RPG has been slowed down for the mobile platform, combat is no longer real-time. You instead take turn to fire, chop, extinguish the enemy while they get the same privilege. Aiming is taken care of by you accuracy attribute. Usual enemies take one to three shots to down, but when using the weapon that damages them the most, an enemy will most often go down in a single shot. Gore and blood splatter everywhere in typical Doom fashion when an enemy is dispatched.
As you shoot, chop, and burn your way through the mars base you gain experience points for completing tasks and dispatching anything that stands in your way. When you have amassed enough experience, you will automatically advance a level and be informed of this progress. Your total health, maximum armour, and battle statistics will improve, and just to be friendly, your health will also be set to its new maximum. Exploring entire levels to clean them out of experience points is vital for good skills progression.
The levels in Doom RPG are large enough that you can get lost. Luckily, the good old Doom automap has survived the conversion. You will find the automap extremely useful since most levels are mode up from interconnecting box-shaped rooms; it is easy to confuse one room with another. Your automap can be upgraded to show the entire level layout without previously going to every corner of the level by downloading the master map from a computer. This is much akin to the PC doom full automap bonus item.
There are a total of twelve regular enemies in the game with each enemy having three variations making for a total of 36 enemies! The enemies include the zombie private, chaingun soldier, imp, cacodaemon, bull daemon, pain elemental, mancubus, and the notorious archvile. There are also a few bosses but I will leave those for you to encounter.
Doom RPG takes place over 11 levels on mars with varying scenery working its way to a mechanistic, hellish nightmare. The size of the levels will surely have you glued to your mobile for hours.
